A victory for local democracy

A victory for local democracy

In November 2015, the government announced its intention to block local councils in England and Wales from deciding how to invest their pension funds. It was a clear threat to our rights to organise divestment campaigns to make sure our councils aren't supporting human rights abusing companies. We were on the case immediately, calling it out as an attack on local democracy.

We committed to putting up a serious fight to this divestment ban. Over 23,000 people took action in our campaign to protect local democracy, joined by trade union branches, local councils, faith groups and MPs from across the political spectrum.

Our friends at the Palestine Solidarity Campaign decided to take the case to the High Court, and we submitted a witness statement testifying to the important impact we all achieved through divestment campaigns focused on getting companies like G4S to end their complicity in Israel's violations of international law.

We just got word today that the High Court has ruled in our favour. It's such a testament to the power of taking action collectively, as this regulation would have slipped by unnoticed had we not mobilised to stop it.

Please share the great news of this victory!
