A Thriving Business

A Thriving Business

A new report on the detention of migrants was launched in March. Migreurop’s Immigrant Detention in the European Union: A Thriving Business focuses on privatisation in the migrant detention system. Britain is a pioneer and corporations like G4S, Serco, Mitie and Capita make millions locking up migrants in privately run detention centres.

Outsourcing is also taking off across Europe. In Italy, the ‘Mafia Capitale’ scandal revealed the hold of mafia networks on the Italian detention system. In France, a construction company hired undocumented migrants to build a detention centre that would later hold the same migrants.

Since the 1990s, detention has become the preferred method for managing migrant populations in Europe. Between 2003 and 2008, the numbers being detained in France doubled and have not fallen since.

The report says “suicide and attempted suicide, self-harm, mental health problems, depression as well as degrading treatment, physical and verbal assault, rape, etc are commonplace in detention centres.” Yet there are big profits to be made, especially where the companies running the centres put detainees to work for pitiful rates of pay. In most cases, Britain is the worst offender.
