In a move of dastardly proportions (and dark Machiavellian political spin), Labour Party members in Newham received an email from the Mayor of Newham, Robin Wales, claiming that he has asked the national Labour Party to re-run the Trigger Ballot in Newham. The email followed the publication of an article in the Newham Recorder saying the same thing.
Conceding to a re-run of the Trigger Ballot, Robin Wales says that last year's result should be cancelled in the interests of the Labour Party so that any political damage (which he claims a court case would bring) doesn't affect Labour's changes in the local elections next May. What he is really saying is that he accepts the Trigger Ballot held between October and December last year was rigged in his favour so that he could win. This has been the real cause of the damage to the Labour Party locally (alongside him losing £52 million on his London Stadium gamble and all the other screw-ups he has overseen).
So his statement today is just a smokescreen of 'admission of guilt' and spin. It also isn't his decision to make! We've always called for the wishes of Labour Party members who voted in the Trigger Ballot last year to be respected. Remember, members voted overwhelmingly for an open selection so that they could choose from a range of candidates - but because of the suspect votes of some affiliates Robin Wales was 'reaffirmed' as the Labour Party candidate.
Don't forget, the legal action was launched by local Labour Party members who wanted to expose the way in which the selection process to 're-affirm' Sir Robin Wales was marred with irregularities, lack of information, transparency and all-round confusion. They also made it clear to the Labour Party that they wanted to avoid legal action - but their voices were ignored.
A re-run of the Trigger Ballot is not good enough. It has to be an Open Selection so that Labour Party members can choose, not some dodgy affiliate moves.
