Supporting The Junior Doctors
Val Graham, Chesterfield TUC, reports
ON SATURDAY 9 JANUARY I attended an excellent Labour policy meeting, organised by Momentum supporter Chris Williamson, entitled An Economy For All The People. It was held in Derby and featured John McDonnell.
Junior doctors led a well attended workshop at the event, explaining their case and gearing up for action. Through Keep our NHS Public (KONP), Chesterfield TUC already had BMA contacts and was able to join up with junior doctors in force on 12 January outside the Royal Hospital. TUC helpers set up a gazebo to make tea, coffee and bacon butties for the pickets. Well-wishers turned up to donate home-made cakes. The response from passing cars was loud and leafleters at the main hospital entrance got an overwhelming thumbs up.
We gave out both BMA and KONP leaflets which also highlighted the issue of nurses’ bursaries. We plan to support further action when it goes ahead and also organise with the BMA a Meet the Doctors event in Chesterfield.
The doctors on the picket told us that they had not realised that picketing could be fun. Along with visible support, hot food and drink always does the trick especially in bitter cold weather.
