COUNCILS FIGHT THE CUTS!
BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL’S announcement of the slashing of 1,200 jobs is sickening. That the council can so meekly surrender to the attacks made upon the city and its people by a government elected on a pi ing majority - determined to wreck the welfare state and bring misery and hardship to millions of working people – is a betrayal of the trust placed in them by their electorate.
Instead of knuckling under to the demands of Osborne and his Tory ideology, our council ‘leaders’ should begin to lead. It should follow the example of Birmingham’s Political Unionists who in 1832 fought for the passing of the Reform Bill by organising a massive march and demonstration of over 200,000 citizens – forcing the government of the day to drop its opposition to the Bill.
It’s surely time that all Labour led local authorities begin to challenge this government’s policy of welfare destruction and overcome the passive acceptance of their spiteful and ruthless policies being foisted on the people of this country under the false premise that it is necessary to this country’s economic future.
